Reminiscing Makweti’s Nostalgic Winter Recipes

At Makweti Safari Lodge, we’ve found ways to give the winter chill a certain charm, with our blazing fireplaces, plush blankets and steaming morning drive coffee laced with a smooth shot of Amarula. To bring warmth to the bellies of our guests, our chefs have also turned to some of our most-loved winter recipes – most of which are spicy and curried, and all cooked to absolute perfection!

Little-known fact about spicy food: recipes containing hot spices and curries can promote mental wellness – this is because it’s been shown to naturally stimulate the production of our “happy hormone”, serotonin.

And so, in the midst of the winter cold and a tougher-than-usual year, we felt we should re-share our five favourite winter dishes and their recipes, for you to try at home.

Bon Appetit!

1. East Coast Prawn Curry

We’re not all beef and venison in the bush – Even here, we love a scrumptious seafood dish and our favourite is a prawn duo with east coast curry. This dish possesses the complex flavours of many intricate ingredients, but is easily prepared in no more than 40 minutes, at a relaxed pace.

This is how we bring the beach to the bush!

2. Bobotie Cigars

At Makweti Safari Lodge, we serve Bobotie Cigars as amuse-bouche;  A delicate, bite-sized hors d’œuvre. Amuse-bouches are different from appetizers in that they are not ordered, but rather served according to the chef’s selection before the evening meal.

This bobotie recipe was originally posted and shared by request of many Makweti guests.

3. Pear and Ginger Cake

The cooler weather calls for comfort food, and this Pear And Ginger Cake is most certainly comforting… but closer to decadent! It’s not difficult to make either, and it will wow your family and friends into a state of bliss.

If you want to make something that is as exotic as it is delicious, this is your best bet. Plus it will offer a fond reminder of the cuisine that our chef team so lovingly create in the Makweti kitchen. Get the recipe here and make it at home.
